There are many local wrestling teams and clubs that offer programs throughout the U.S. It’s important to consider your skill level, physical ability and time availability, when choosing a program. Remember to view a match and ask several questions before joining.
Another great way to get started in wrestling is at the school level. Most schools in the U.S. offer wrestling programs from the middle school to college level. You may want to attend a match and speak to the coach to get a better idea of the requirements.
Wrestling can be enjoyed all the way to the Olympic level. Wrestling made its debut at the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Male wrestlers compete for medals in seven freestyle events and seven Greco-Roman events, while female wrestlers compete in four freestyle events.
Wrestling medals have been awarded to athletes at every Summer Olympics since 1896, with the exception of the 1900 Summer Games in Paris, France. Women's freestyle events were introduced at the2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece.
