Olympic Lifting: Olympic style weightlifting is a sport in which participants attempt a maximum weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. The two lifts competed are the Clean and Jerk, and the Snatch. Clean and press was another weightlifting technique, discontinued due to difficulties in judging proper form. 

Competitors compete in one of eight (seven for women) divisions determined by their body mass. In each weight division, competitors compete in both the snatch and clean and jerk, and prizes are usually given for the heaviest weights lifted in the snatch, clean and jerk, and the two combined.

Power Lifting: Power lifting is a strength sport consisting of three events: the bench press, the squat, and the deadlift. Power lifting resembles the sport of Olympic weightlifting, as both disciplines involve lifting weights in three attempts. It evolved from a sport known as 'odd lifts', which followed the same three attempts format, but used a wide variety of events akin to Strongman events. 

Eventually odd lifts became standardized to the three events (squat, bench, deadlift) and became known as power lifting. Power lifting meets take place across the world but mostly in the United States, United Kingdom and Russia. Power lifting has been a Paralympic sport since 1984 and under the International Power lifting Federation is also aWorld Games sport. In power lifting there are certain weight classes and age categories, which are as follows: 

  • Men: 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, 67.5 kg, 75 kg, 82.5 kg, 90 kg, 100 kg, 110 kg, 125 kg, 125 kg +, 
  • Women: 44 kg, 48 kg, 52 kg, 56 kg, 60 kg, 67.5 kg, 75 kg, 82.5 kg, 90 kg, 90 kg +. 

Age categories: 15-19, 20-23, open (any age), masters 40+.

Body Building: Bodybuilding is a form of body modification involving intensive muscle hypertrophy; an individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. In competitive bodybuilding, bodybuilders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who assign points based on their appearance. The muscles are revealed through a process known as the "cutting phase" - a combination of fat loss, oils, and tanning (or tanning lotions) which combined with lighting make the definition of the muscle group more distinct.

In contrast to strongman or power lifting competitions where physical strength is important, or to Olympic weightlifting, where the main point is equally split between strength and technique, bodybuilding competitions typically emphasize condition, size and symmetry. Different organizations emphasize particular aspects of competition, and sometimes have different categories in which to compete.

Circuit Training: Circuit training is a type of interval training in which strength exercises are combined with endurance/aerobic exercises, thus giving you all the benefits of both a cardiovascular and strength training workout. The term circuit means that a number of carefully selected stations will be positioned around the facility consecutively, which may range from hydraulic equipment, free weights, resistance training, squat thrusts, push-ups, star jumps, sit-ups or other exercises.

Participants are assigned to each station, and they then rotate around the stations to the next with little or no rest, performing 15 to 60 second workouts until all exercises have been completed or a certain time requirement achieved.

Made popular in the U.S. by Curves facilities, circuit training is suitable for all levels of ability, age, or fitness level because participants can work at their own level, performing each exercise at their own speed and intensity. Beginners can develop their technique under the direction of the instructor, which can then be applied to good effect when working on their own in the gym. 

Advanced participants can build up to very high levels of intensity or reps while enjoying the atmosphere of a group exercise activity without having to conform to the set routines of an aerobics class.
