The world's largest registration walking event is the International Four Days Marches Nijmegen. The annual Labor Day walk on Mackinac Bridge draws over sixty thousand participants!

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge walk annually draws over fifty thousand participants. Walks are often organized as charity events, with walkers seeking sponsors to raise money for a specific cause. Charity walks range in length from two mile (3 km) or five km walks to as far as fifty miles (eighty km). The MS Challenge Walk is an example of a fifty-mile walk that raises money to fight multiple sclerosis. The Oxfam Trailwalker is a one hundred km event!

A World Cup in racewalking is held biennially, and racewalk events appear in the IAAF Athletics World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and the Pan American Games, among others.

Since 2003, the IAAF has organized an annual worldwide competition series in which elite athletes accumulate points for the right to compete in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge Final and to share over 200,000 USD of prize money. The series of televised events takes place in several countries each year including Mexico, Spain, Russia and China.

  • IML Walking Association

The IML Walking Association is broken down into two Regions: the European Region and the Pan Pacific Region. "Nos Iungat Ambulare" is the official motto of the IML Walking Association which, when translated into English, means "May walking bring us together". The name International Marching League (IML) name was changed to the IML Walking Association in 2006.
