Sleep Habits.jpgMost adults sleep seven to eight hours per night, although the timing, duration, and internal structure of sleep vary among healthy individuals. One should awaken from sleep feeling refreshed and full of energy. There are some people who only seem to feel refreshed after six hours of sleep, where others need nine hours.

If you find yourself suddenly sleeping more than you usually do then you are probably compensating for a decreased quality of sleep.

Below is a chart of average sleep requirements:

Newborns (0-2 months): 12 to 18 hours
Infants (3-months to 1-year): 14 to 15 hours
Toddlers (1- to 3-years): 12 to 14 hours
Preschoolers (3- to 5-years): 11 to 13 hours
School-aged children (5- to 12-years): 10 to 11 hours
Teens and preteens (12- to 18-years): 8.5 to10 hours
Adults (18+): 7.5 to 9 hours
Seniors: 7.5 to 9 hours

As we age, we still need as much sleep as we required throughout our lives. As seniors, we often do not sleep enough because we have chronic pain and conditions that keep us from sleeping. We may also be sad or depressed which also reduces the time and quality of our sleep. Quality sleep is vital for your overall health. Maintaining a healthier and better lifestyle filled with good eating choices and proper exercise often improves sleep, can help you fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply.
