Description

What is a pulmonologist? A pulmonologist is a medical doctor who is responsible for breathing issues, including the lungs.

When to visit

When would you see a pulmonologist? You would see a pulmonologist if your asthma is hard to manage.

What to expect

What would you expect during a visit with a pulmonologist? During the first visit to a pulmonologist, the doctor will probably establish a chart that includes a medical history. The doctor will also do a physical examination, which may include asthma tests such as spirometry, peak expiratory flow (PEF) and bronchial provocation. Once the pulmonologist has diagnosed asthma, he/she will prescribe the appropriate medications and devise a daily management plan to follow at home, work or school. The goal of the pulmonologist is to control asthma symptoms so they don't interfere with daily activities, awaken the patient at night, cause the patient to miss school or work, cause breathing difficulties during physical activities or cause the patient to have to go to the ER.

How often to visit

How often should you visit a pulmonologist? The frequency of visits to a pulmonologist would depend on each individual situation.
