Description

What is a perinatologist? A perinatologist is a doctor specializing in treating the fetus/baby and mother during pregnancy, labor, and delivery, particularly when the mother and/or baby are at a high risk for complications.

When to visit

When would you see a perinatologist? A referral to a perinatologist may be required for women with high-risk pregnancies or fetal complications.

What to expect

What would you expect during a visit with a perinatologist? Perinatologists are capable of making complicated diagnoses and performing difficult procedures such as amniocentesis and cordocentesis. In rare cases perinatologists can administer medication across the placenta. Fortunately only 10 percent of pregnant women need to consult with a perinatologist. Depending on the severity of the complication, the perinatologist may also be required to deliver the baby.

How often to visit

How often should you visit a perinatologist? The frequency of visits to a perinatologist would depend on each individual situation.
