Description

What is an obstetrician? An obstetrician is a doctor with specialized training in caring for women with complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

When to visit

When would you see an obstetrician? A woman would see an obstetrician from the moment she suspects she is pregnant and several times during her pregnancy.

What to expect

What would you expect during a visit with an obstetrician? The first visit to an obstetrician is designed to confirm your pregnancy and to determine your general health. In addition, the visit will give your healthcare provider clues to any risk factors that may affect your pregnancy. It will typically be longer than future visits. The purpose of the prenatal visit is to: determine your due date; find out your health history; explore the medical history of family members; and determine if you have any pregnancy risk factors based on your age, health and/or personal and family history. You will be asked about previous pregnancies and surgeries, medical conditions and exposure to any contagious diseases. Also, notify your healthcare provider about any medications (prescription or over-the-counter) you have taken or are currently taking.

How often to visit

How often should you visit an obstetrician? This will vary slightly from doctor to doctor. Most doctors will ask you to come back for a monthly visit from your first appointment till you reach 31 weeks. From 32 to 36 weeks, you will normally see him/her twice a month. From 36 weeks onwards, you will see your obstetrician weekly.
